Lions through to 4th Round of County Cup For The First Time After 5-3 Win Over PT Rangers
A frosty but sunny morning in Breachwood, Referee Hucker agreed to delay the kick off 15 minutes for this Intermediate County Cup, 3rd Round Tie. Lions opposition were PT Rangers from Hertford and who play in Division 2 of the Mercury Waltham League.
The Lion's starting eleven: Sanchez, Abrahams, French, Fildes, A.Jefferies, Crisp, Dye(C), D.Jefferies, P.Farr,Canning & Burnage.
Although Lion's were at home, Lion's played in their green and yellow away shirts as PT Rangers played in white and blue.
For the first ten minutes both sides probed their unknown opposition. Lion's edged the initial possession with Danny Jefferies instrumental in midfield, Graham French, Ian Abrahams and Andy Files defended with excellent composure.
Danny Dye flashed an early chance over the bar from inside the Rangers box. Graham Crisp was certainly up for the game as he crunched through several telling tackles. Danny Dye had another chance similar to his first after a well worked move down the left hand side. This time he rattled the crossbar. Lion's needed to capitalise on their fluent play. The breakthrough came when on the edge of the box, Canning nodded down the ball into the path of the feisty Pete Farr. Farr had only one thing in mind, putting the ball into the top left corner of the goal.
One nil to the Lion's at half time.
Lion's got a second early in the second with a one two between Adam and Danny Jefferies. With sublime understanding Adam collected the ball from his brother feinted a defender and slipped the ball into the box for Danny to cheekily chip the keeper. Lion's pushed on for more goals, a superb cross from Abrahams gave Canning a great chance to add his name to the score but he shot wide. However moments later Canning made a big one two cross to Burnage who returned the ball for a trademark Canning Cannonball into the roof of the net for 3 nil.
Every cup tie has a twist, PT Rangers wanted to make a game of it and sought to test Sanchez in goal, who saved with his cap at one point. Adam Jefferies also clearing off the line.
It was from a Rangers free kick that found an unmarked Ranger's player at the back post who made no mistake in putting the ball into the Lion's net.
Harrison had replaced the injured Crisp and was quickly in the game with a slide rule pass through the Rangers defence for Danny Jefferies. He was always favourite for a one on one with the Ranger's keeper, and coolly slotted his second.
David Farr and Wayne Gardner replaced Abrahams and Pete Farr. David Farr was soon harassing for the ball and Gardner used his physical presence to his advantage as Lion's looked to secure the lead.
The game looked won at 4-1. But Ranger's decided it was game on when they got their second. The ball spilled from a crunching collision between Harrison and a Rangers midfield player. Rangers took advantage of the available space to score. The game was still alive at 4-2. But Rangers were down to ten men when the Ranger's midfield player had to go off from the previous collision with Harrison but they had used all of their substitutes. Harrison although hobbling, stayed on as Lion's had also used all their subs.
With ten minutes to go Ranger's headed their third goal to put the pressure back onto the Lion's. With minutes remain Burnage decided to add his name on the scoresheet with a well taken goal to ensure Lion's went into the 4th round for the first time.
Danny Jefferies was the Managers Man of the Match and wins another meal for two in the Red Lion.
Another big thank you to our loyal home supporters who braved the cold, Including: the Jefferies family, Ash, Mel and Soccerettes Laura & Beanwack sporting their bobble hats.
