Lion's Knocked Out Of The KLM Cup

Today's Referee was Currey, for the KLM Quarter Final in Breachwood between the Lion's and Division One Champion's, Mallard.Today's game was the furthest that the Breachwood Lion's had reached in the KLM Cup Competition.

The Lion's starting eleven: Sanchez, A.Jefferies, French, Fildes, Crisp, Dye(C), Burnage, D.Jefferies, Canning, Harvey, Collins.

Lions started by taking the game to the Division One side with plenty of the early pressure, though Mallard were quick on the counter attack. However they were often thwarted by the no nonsense defending of French and Adam Jefferies.

Ali Collins got away an early shot on target. Captain Danny Dye and Danny Jefferies in particular, were committed in winning tackles in the midfield. Lion's had another chance when John Harvey headed just wide from a deep cross.

Halfway through the first half, Mallard countered by forcing a corner. Lion's were unable to clear the corner at the first attempt and a Mallard forward stabbed the ball home to take the lead. Undeterred Lions continued to play attacking football, defender Andy Fildes shooting from range. Graham Crisp was pivotal in the midfield, defying a couple of counter attacks starting from the Mallard defence

The equaliser finally came when Fildes switched the ball from the left to the right wing where Adam Burnage collected the ball. Burnage worked some space by taking on a defender, and chipped the ball into the box where a determined Ali Collins arrived at the near post and headed the ball across the goalkeeper into the far top corner of the net.

The Lion's almost took the lead just before half time when John Harvey successfully gambled on chasing a back pass, pulled the ball back across the penalty area. Canning's shot was just marginally over the crossbar.

1-1 at Half time.

Lion's start second half with a strong sense of purpose and enjoying more possession. But Mallard regained the lead with a shot through a crowded penalty box and the unsighted Sanchez was unable to get down in time to stop the ball from hitting the net.

Mallard had a man sent off for an altercation with Ali Collins.

Lions continued to press the play with balls being whipping into the Mallard area, The Lion's came close when a stretched Ali Collins was just unable to connect with a low cross into the six yard box.

Another quick Mallard counter attack earned them a corner, a loose knock down found the feet of a Mallard forward who hit the ball into the roof of the net to give them a 3-1 lead.

Harrison replaced Harvey and Pete Farr replaced Burnage. Minute's later Pete Farr steamed in at the back post to bury a cross into the roof of the net for 2-3.

Ten minutes from time, Mallard had a second man sent off after a second booking for kicking the ball away.
In the final minute, Lion's won a free kick on the edge of the penalty area when Ali Collins was sandwiched by two defenders, but the Mallard keeper was able to save Collin's shot.
