Invitation Cup Lion's Hit Seven Against Riley's

Lion's starting eleven: Gardner, French, McCartney, A.Jefferies, Fildes, Dye(C), D.Jefferies, Burnage, P.Farr, Marlow, Canning

Today's invitation cup game against Division 3 side Riley's who had a two goal advantage.

Breachwood started the more lively determined to prove their footballing prowess after a recent disappointing run. Ian Canning and Danny Jefferies fired in some early shots on goal. In a slightly different formation than usual Captain Danny Dye found the space to enjoy taking on players.

McCartney, French and Fildes played high up the pitch in defence to catch Rileys offside on the ocassional attack. McCartney was excellent at intercepting high balls and then setting up the industrious Pete Farr on the left wing to start yet another Lion's attack.

The breakthrough finally came when Burnage who had his best game of the season played in a low cross in from the left for Ben Marlow to pounce on at the near post for Breachwood's first goal of the game.

Lion's second goal shortly followed after more pressure when a Riley's defender tried to clear an incoming cross from the right but steered it passed his keeper from close range into the bottom right hand corner for an Own Goal.

Gardner pulled off a high save from a swirling free Kick from outside the box just before half time.

Early in the second half Ben Marlow added to his tally with a shot low into the corner of the net.

Harrison replaced McCartney.

Ian Canning hit a low shot from outside the box, the goalkeeper looked to of comfortably saved it, only to see it go through his legs into the goal .

Ian Canning's second goal was almost a replica of his first!

Adam Jefferies tried a shot from range before his brother Danny Jefferies, who had played well all game decided to get in on the act with a well worked solo goal.

Ian Canning capped a marvellous second half hatrick running diagonally into the box and pulling the ball back across the goal into the far corner of the net before the keeper had even seen it.

Minutes from time. Rileys defender punch the ball over the bar for an automatic penalty. Ben Marlow took it intending to make his hatrick. unluckily his shot clipped the bar as it went over. The tie finished 7-2 to the Lion's
