Lion's 4 v 5 Aston Athletic

Lion's starting eleven: French, Fildes, Sullivan, Weeks, Griffin, Dye(C), Turkentine, Burnage, Gardner, Fleckney, Harrison.

Today's game at Breachwood was an Invitation Cup Tie against 2nd Division Aston Athletic who start with a goal advantage.

Breachwood started brightly. Burnage put Harrison through on goal, who slide the ball past the keeper at the near post but the goal was deemed to be offside.

The Lion's were then caught by three sucker punch goals all similar with long balls over the Lion's defence to put Aston four nil up.

Changes had to be made to formation which unfortunately led to the battling defender John Griffin being replaced in order for the Lion's to chase the game.

The extra man in midfield made an immediate impact and just before half time the dynamic Fleckney pulled away to the by line and crossed the ball to the back post where Gardner slid in to put the ball into the roof of the Aston net.

At half time the tie stood at 4-1 to Aston

At half time the experienced David Farr replaced the injured Sullivan.

Captain Dye's team started the second half with steely determination. Fildes and Weeks were resolute in defence.
Turkentine moved out to the right wing and linked up well with Burnage in attack.

Lion's gradually closed the gap. Fleckney supplied Gardner for his second, then Gardner set up Burnage to score.

The tie was level when Harrison's pass allowed Burnage to beat the offside trap and square the ball for captain Dye to score from close range.

With only minutes remaining, Breachwood pushed hard to go ahead, but it was Aston who countered and stole the tie with a shot from the edge of the box.

After giving Aston a 4 goal head start, Lion's left themselves with too much to do. Final Score 4-5

Flecker's was the Managers man of the match.
Many thanks to our supporters including the Dye's
