Old Town Wetherspoons 5 v 4 Lion's

Lion's starting eleven: Gardner, P.Farr, French, Jordan, Harrison, Fildes, Griffin, Burnage (C), Weeks, Pearson, Jeffrey

It rained for ninety minutes at Ridlins End. Breachwood played some flowing football, Pete Farr having a crack from range, and John Griffin nearly scooped a goal after the Spoon's keeper spilled the ball.
The pressure paid off when sixteen year old Ed Jeffrey gave Lion's the lead on his starting debut by breaking through and hit the ball low with his right foot into the bottom corner of the Spoon's net.
However the Lion' s concentration dropped for about fifteen minutes, Spoon's took full advantage by quickly netting four goals. Perhaps it could of been more but for the reflexes of Gardner in goal.
Breachwood pulled one back before halftime. Man of the Match Andy Fildes long range free kick found the top corner of the net off the head of Harrison. Spoon's led 4-2 at half time.

Resurgent Lion's came out after the break, Canning relaced Michael Weeks and later in the second half Chad Eldridge replaced Jeffrey and David Farr replaced Griffin in midfield.

Unfortunately, the normally nimble Rob Pearson had deemed to of fouled the Spoons forward in the box for a penalty, which Spoon's converted to extend their lead.

Undeterred Breachwood fought back as a team, Burnage and Canning instrumental in attack.
Hope survived when Graham French drilled in a free kick around the wall from the edge of the area into the bottom corner of the net. The diving head of Harrison met another Fildes free kick to take the score to 5-4.

Young Chad Eldridge had a great opportunity from twenty yards to finish but was unlucky with the ball in the torrid conditions.

Despite the 5-4 result, Breachwood could take heart from their performance.

Marquis Of Lorne 5 v 1 Lion's

Lion's Eleven: Gardner, French, P.Farr, Jordan, D.Farr, Griffin, Fildes, Jenkins, Chad?, Harrison, Weeks.
The Lion's start their tenth season in transition and in Division Two. The away game to Lorne gave debut to two youngers who have recently joined the squad, Scott Jenkins and Chad.
Breachwood started brightly with some early shots.
The turning point of the game was undoubtedly when Griffin was judged to of deliberately handled the ball inside his own area. The Lorne No10 put the ball into the bottom left corner out of Gardners reach. Despite a number of great Man of the Match saves from Gardner and some well defended corners, Breachwood found themselves 4 nil down at halftime.
The second half was an even match, Lorne scored again, but the Lion's never gave up and battled for every ball, Griffin and Fildes pushed forward, Harrison headed just over the bar, but it was Michael Weeks right foot shot from the edge of the area that got the consolation goal for the Lions.

FIFA Follow The Lion's Foreigner's Policy

The article below was written for the Breachwood Times...

World governing body FIFA hope to impose a policy which would ensure all clubs field at least six homegrown players in their starting line-ups by 2010. But whilst European football chief Platini contends that this is unworkable under European law, local football team Breachwood Lion’s have implemented a similar policy for the last ten years.

Many may remember the Walden Rangers team that played at the Breachwood Recreation ground over a decade ago in n the South Midlands League. Originally Walden Rangers comprised of local players, but by the time of their demise there were no locals playing for them.

Many local youngsters who had enjoyed a kick about on the Rec over the years saw the opportunity to re-establish a local football team. Established in 1999 the team is now about start its tenth season in the Comet Stevenage Sunday League. The last ten years have produced a certain degree of success including Cup winning appearances at Stevenage Borough’s Ground.

The Club’s success is truly built on local players. Determined not to follow the path of Walden Rangers, The Club’s “Foreigner Rule” states that only five non local players are allowed to be signed and only three non local players can play at any one time. However such foreign players do have a friendly connection to the locality, usually being a friend of one or more players.
The age range of the players in the team over the last ten years has ranged from 16 to 49 enjoying a Community Spirit on and off the field.

A Local player is one who lives in or grew up in Breachwood Green and surrounding villages. Currently the majority of Local players come from Breachwood Green, Offley, Lilley, Tea Green and Kings Walden. Some Local players currently live outside the villages but were born in the village or enjoy a similar connection. The team is strengthened by a few “foreign” players coming from as far a field as Hitchin and Redbourn!

The team would also like to say thank you to the local support and sponsorship over the last ten years, including The Red Lion and Screwfast Ltd, and hopefully for the next ten years. There is also an open invitation for anyone wishing to join the squad and to help keep up competition for places. Potential new plays can call The Club’s Secretary David 07899 795017 or The Club’s Chairman George 07770 266663.

Pin Green 4 v 1 Lion's

Lion's final starting eleven for this season: French, Jordan, P.Farr, D.Farr, Turkentine, D.Dye(C), Hearne, Griffin, Weeks, Marlow, Harrison.

Breachwood had a lethargic start to their final game of the season against Pin Green at Hampson Park, shipping four goals before half time, three of which came from corners.

The Lion's began to stop the rot 15 minutes before half time when a pass from Warren Hearne allowed Harrison to score from eighteen yards, over the head of the Pin Green keeper.

The score was 4-1 to Pin Green at half time.

The second half was a much more equal affair with the Lion's creating more chances.

Pete Farr shot over the bar early in the second half.

Jordan and David Farr were more determind in defence allowing Turkentine to surge forward and link up with Captain Dye.

Michael Weeks was able to break down the left wing and create opportunity for Ben Marlow.

Keeper Graham French was quick off his line a couple of time to avert any Pin Green danger

Breachwood played the last ten minutes with ten men when Ben Marlow, who had battled hard all game went off with a suspected broken wrist.

With minutes remaining, midfield warrior John Griffin hit the perfect free kick over the Pin Green defence but Harrison's header landed inches wide of the far post.

So a goalless second half meant Pin Green won the match 4-1

Div 1 Cup Semi Final: Lion's 1 v 6 Pied Piper

Lion's starting eleven: French, Jordan, P.Farr, Fildes, Harrison, D.Dye(C), Burnage, Griffin, Canning, Weeks, B.Dye

The delay in this fixture due to the snow last week had not done the Lion's any favours, with key players missing and Iaian Turkentine having to pull out during the warm up, meant a restructure of the team sheet.

Breachwood were defending comfortably until Pete Jordan was deemed to of fouled a Piper player inside the box. The Ref pointed to the spot. Teale stepped up, but his left foot shot rattled back off Graham Frenchs cross bar.

Ten minutes later Piper took a short corner, the resulting shot deflected off Harrison's shoulder pass French to put Piper one nil up. Harrison had the Lion's best chance of the half heading a Burnage free kick marginally over the bar.

Piper led one nil at half time.

Early in the second half Ben Dye beat the off side trap and went one on one with the Piper keeper, but his shot went wide.

David Farr replaced the injured Ian Canning on the left wing.

Piper scored two quick goals, attacking with pace down the right wing and converting from close range from the resulting cross, one of which took a cruel deflection off Pete Farr.

With the tie slipping out of reach Breachwood had to go for it with Capt Dye pushing forward. David Farr tried to set Ben Dye up down the left chanel. Griffin and Weeks battled in midfield to let Burnage cause some damage. Burnage had a chance with shot that just rose over the crossbar.

The rock at the back Andy Fildes had the thankless task of organising defensive duties when Piper countered.

As Breachwood tired, Piper scorerd three more to go into the final but not before Breachwood scored a consolation goal late on from a deep Burnage free kick headed home by Harrison at the back post.

Lion's 2 v 1 Pig & Whistle

Lion's starting eleven: French, Jordan, P.Farr, Fildes, Turkentine, D.Dye(C), Hearne, D.Jefferies, Weeks, Canning, Harrison.
Despite losing 14-2 to Pig & Whistle with nine men previously in the season, Breachwood came into todays game with great confidence.
The first half was full of open play at both ends. Breachwood had to defend from the front.
Hearne and Danny Dye carved open some early chances.
Then Captain Dye took up the responsiblity in midfield to allow Danny Jefferies the license to drive forward.

Adam Burnage replaced the injured Pete Farr and added an extra spice to the Lion's attacking formation linking well with Michael Weeks.
Pete Jordan was an outlet at left back when Breachwood defended to keep Pig & Whistle at bay Jordan would quickly find Canning who opened up the left wing for the Lion's.

Just before half time Harrison headed wide a great cross from Pete Jordan.

Nil Nil at Half time

Ben Dye replaced Harrison.

In the 67th minute Pig & Whistle countered, a cross from the left found an unmarked forward whose shot was cleared off the line by Turkentine, but only out as far as Johnston whose shot found the Lion's net.

After going one nil up, Pig seemed to take their foot off the gas. Adam Burnage attacked down the right wing and played a telling pass into the box that allowed substitute Ben Dye to finally beat the off side trap and nip the ball pass the Pig & Whistle goalkeeper and into the bottom corner of the net to justifyably bring Breachwood level.

Minutes later, Danny Jefferies flick on landed in the danger zone between the last defender and the goalkeeper. The keeper tried to claim the ball but wasn't quick enough for the canny Iain Canning who managed to get a toe on the ball to slip it pass the keeper and roll over the goal line to give the Lion's a well fought lead.
Despite suffering with cramp Michael Weeks capped a great performance with neat play at right back.

In the final minutes as P&W pushed hard to get something from the game, The Fildes and Turkentine Centre Back Partnership, were called upon to make several timely tackles and headed clearences.
Then Graham Frenches full stretched save, turning a low shot around the post, saved all the points for the Lion's.
Breachwood won 2-1

Lion's starting eleven: French, P.Farr, Fildes, Jordan, Harrison, Griffin, D.Farr, Pearson, D.Dye(C), Canning, Burnage.

Today's Invitation Cup game against Premier DC Outbar meant that the Lion's went into the game with a one goal advantage at Thomas Alleynes pitch.

Breachwood had to start on the defensive as DC Outbar pressed to erase Lion's advantage.
Their pressure paid off after the ball pinballed around the Lions six yard box before crossing the goal line for 1-1.

Lion's captain Danny Dye was able to join Burnage in attack as Breachwood tried to get back on top. David Farr and John Griffin gave extra support, battling in midfield as DC OutBar were quick on the counter attack.

DC Outbar tried to push their advantage but were thwarted by the sun tanned Pete Farr twice clearing the ball off the line.

The score was 1-1 at half time.

The Lion's were a little stretched when a long pass found a DC Outbar forward able to beat the Lion' s defence to slot home thier second goal.

Outbar we frustrated by a string of top drawer acrobatic saves from Lion's goalkeeper Graham French, keeping the Lion' s still with a chance in the game.

In the last half an hour the Lion's adjusted their formation to try and regain the momentum.

It nearly worked, with Burnage and Canning able to fire shots from the edge of the penalty box.

Harrison headed Burnage's corner inches wide.

Robbie Pearson, playing his first game since before Christmas , stepped up a gear on the left wing after linking well all game with the tireless Pete Jordan, Pearson turned the defender inside out before setting up Dye and then Canning for a chance on goal.

Burnage was able to beat the DC Outbar off side trap for a possible one on one with the keeper, but had his shirt cynically pulled back by the centre back.

Andy Fildes who had been the rock in the Breachwood defence floated in the free kick, which Harrison headed wide.

The game ended 2-1 to DC Outbar.

Peartree 1 v 3 Lion's

Lion's starting eleven: French, A.Jefferies. Fildes, Turkentine, Jordan, Hearne, D.Dye, D.Jefferies, Canning, Burnage, Harrison

Breachwood went a goal up early on when Burnage whipped in a cross from the right wing for Harrison, but it was the centre back that made the connection for an Own Goal.

Lion's continued to pass the ball around through Danny Dye, Danny Jefferies sprayed the ball from left to right. Burnage attacked with pace into the Peartree box before hitting a low shot with the outside of the foot into the the far bottom corner of the Peartree goal for two nil.

Burnage scored again ten minutes later with a similar pass from Danny Jefferies.

Canning scored a fourth but was offside so Breachwood led three nil at half time.

Lion's keeper Graham French made an outstanding save from point blank range. His reflexes flicking the ball over the bar.

The dynamic duo of Fildes and Turkentine were comfortable in central defence heading clear virtually every aerial bombardment from Peartree.

For much of the game Peartree were reduced to shooting far from out but Peartree managed to score their first goal in four games this season against Breachwood when a corner went in as an own goal off Captain Dye.

Hearne carved his way through the Peartree midfield but the final shot was saved by the keeper.

Wayne Gardner replace Harrison with 25 minutes to go.

On the left, Jordan had battled hard all game to feed Canning down the wing. Canning had a great chance to score after cutting in from the left but his shot went straight at the keeper.

Emperors Head 2 v 0 Lion's

Breachwood starting Ten! : French, A.Dye, Fildes, Jordan, Harrison, D.Farr, Griffin, Canning, Burnage, Gardner.

Breachwood knew they were in for a tough game as they only had ten players avaliable, but those players had great attitude and discipline to stick to their tactics to not make it easy for Emperor's Head and indeed cause them some problems.

The Lion's managed to create some great counter attacking opportunities with their best chance in the first half falling to Gardner. The creative flair of Burnage and Canning created a constant threat.

Andy Fildes and co defenders Andy Dye and Pete Jordan worked hard to keep Emperor at bay who made use of the extra player by playing the ball wide across the middle of the pitch.

The Breachwood midfield of Harrison, Griffin and Farr made it difficult for Emperor by keeping their shape and battling for every ball.

Emperor finally took the lead when Goodyears shot from inside the box took enough of a deflection of Andy Dye to pass Keeper Graham French.

At one nil down at half time the Lion's were upbeat that they could still get something from the game.

Early in the second half Breachwood had some chances came from set pieces.

Canning fired a shot just marginally over the bar.

Then Canning found the top corner of the net but the goal was disallowed as he was deemed to of controlled the ball with his hand

Keeper Graham French had to dive full stretch to turn the ball round the post from a shot from an Emperor substitute.

After winning a free kick, Harrison got a header on a Fildes free kick only to see it come back off the bar.

Emperors second goal came when the long ball beat Lion's defence and Goodyear lobbed the ball high over French.

Burnage and Gardner drove foward, as Breachwood desperately tried to get a consolation goal in the closing minutes.

Despite losing two, the ten man team had put in a good performance with Andy Dye being the Manager's Man of the Match.

Pete Jordan did well in defence cutting out the Emperors play and setting up Gardner on the left wing for an attack. Breachwood then switched the play as the instrumental Captain Dye linked well with Adam Jefferies, playing Burnage in on the right flank to beat the offside trap for an attempt on goal.

Lion's soon doubled their lead when Warren Hearne finally scored his first goal for the club (in the right net) with a peach of shot from 25 yards, dipping in under the crossbar.

After beating the offside trap Harrison failed to put Lion's three nil up before half time, dragging his shot just wide of the post.

Lion's led two nil at half time.

Emperors Head pulled a goal back ten minutes after the break with a shot from range, which set up a competitive battle for the the rest of the second half.

Lion's continued to create chances, Gardner , Hearne and Danny Jefferies all had shots on goal. Harrison's header from a Fildes free kick also went just over the bar.

Goal number two was a classic Lion's set piece, Gardner's long throw in into the penalty area for Harrison to flick on for Burnage to volley into the top corner of the net.

Ian Canning came close with a shot, Gardner had a speculative effort from outside the box.

Pete Jordan was unlucky to finish off an attacking run from defence.

Minutes later Pied Piper took the lead with a strike from outside the box, and then doubled it after an unfortunate Hearne own goal on the edge of the six yard box.
